Baie dankie daarvoor.

Something that was a worrying factor to me and to the other members of the SA Executive Committee was the absence of medal winners during the prize-giving function on Saturday evening. The SA Committee will certainly discuss on its next meeting a proposal that unless a medal winner gives in advance an acceptable reason, in writing, no award would be made to that athlete if he or she does not attend the prize-giving function. It was on the tip of my tongue to change the decision of the selectors and to award the victrix ludorum trophy to Yvonne Riggien, who was present, instead of Viv Williams, who stayed away without any apology. The decision to award victrix ludorum to Viv was in any event taken by a majority decision, not unanimously.

Doen so voort WP!

I have received information about a new competition that SAMPA has introduced in South Africa. They informed members that they host on behalf of the UIPM a new created competition linked “to the success of Biathle (continuous run swim run combination)”. They call this new competition the World School Biathle Championships. It consists of two separate disciplines, running and swimming. The swimming is conducted in a 50m pool and the running is conducted on a standardised track. The times of the athletes are converted to Modern Pentathlon points. The final result is the sum of the points scored in both events. The distances the athletes swim vary between 50m for age groups up to 10 years old and 100 metres for age groups up to 18 years. The kids who swim 50 metres only run 500 metres and the kids who swim 100 metres run 1000 metres. The swimming discipline is conducted first and the running is a pack start. From what I understand SAMPA will award medals to the top three ranked athletes in South Africa and certificates to the top 10 for each category who participated in the event. From what I can gather this new competition is destined to be an abortion. How can an under 8 athlete compete against an under 18 athlete for the top three ranked athletes in South Africa? It is also difficult for me to see how successful a pack start for all the running participants can be. How can the points scored by an athlete taking part in windy and rainy Cape Town be compared to the points of an athlete taking part on the same day in a sunny Johannesburg? The names of the three top ranked athletes in South Africa will then be made known to the UIPM and after a comparison of the points scored in the rest of the world where this is going to be practised (I think only England, if I take into account the “success” of Biathle who is virtually only practised in South Africa and England). Most importantly, this newly created competition is in direct competition with Biathlon as we have practised it in South Africa for more than 30 years now. This is a new effort by SAMPA to take over and control Biathlon as we know it. There is no room, in my view, for two competitions of a similar kind in South Africa and in particular not in our schools. Unfortunately, SAMPA, through our previous co-operation with them, got the names of our biathletes on their data base. They have also recruited previous members of provisional biathlon committees and senior athletes as their administrators. We should make a point of it to discourage any of our biathletes to take part in this new competition which I predict would be a complete failure. These efforts by SAMPA (after our attempt to co-operate came to a standstill when they withdrew from further negotiations) is an attempt to plough with our calves and to interfere with our meetings. Everybody knows that they wait to see where our next SA Championships are to be held when they organise their Biathle Championships in the same area. They have done it again when they attempted to book the facilities at Maselspoort near Bloemfontein over the Easter weekend of 2010 when we have our SA Championships in Bloemfontein. You all remember the ridiculous situation in Paarl when SAMPA thought that our SA Championships were going to be held over the Easter weekend. When they realised that it was not the situation they hastily had to find a different venue in the vicinity of Paarl where they could do their thing when we had our SA’s. I do not want to get involved in an ugly hostile fight with SAMPA. I just have the interest of our sport at heart.

Biathlon regards
